Weather or whether not we go Camping

Well, our caravan, Moby Dick, is all packed and ready to go.

The beds are made, the small kitchen cabinets are filled with dry goods and the coffee machine is stored. My new underwear and pajamas are freshly washed and packed. My laptop is ready to be put to use for my new book.

Towels? Check…

Sturdy shoes?…check….

Maps?… check….

and on and on the list goes…

We plan to organize our route right after breakfast. Hubby and I are sitting at our breakfast table. He’s reading the newspaper. I’m cupping my warm coffee mug while gazing out the window, ( yes, that means an author is working)….and Hubby starts reading out loud, ( interrupting an incredibly touching scene going on in my head)….But since he can’t read my mind… he continues. “A cold front is coming our way… The warm sunny fall days have come to an end. We are in for rain, hurricanes and dismal weather for the upcoming weeks, presumably till the first snow fall.”

“Heh? Noooo really?” We both sit there and just stare at each other. How about Italy?” I ask.

“No they are having the same cold front as we are.”

Hmf. After the first flood of disappointment, I then look out the window again, watching the clouds gather; dark and heavy, before my eyes.

A sudden ache fills my heart; not because our camping vacation has literally fallen into a big muddy puddle, but because I’m thinking of the plight of thousands and thousands of homeless refugees who have no choice, but to camp out in this weather.

I clean off the table, give my hubby a kiss, and suggest we simply make the best of it and vacation at home.

We sauntered out into our garden, and in that moment a sunray broke through the clouds, and landed right smack onto a single rose in front of us. … I ran quickly back into the house, grabbed the camera, and click.

It was like a valuable message, sent to us on a ray of sun, reminding us once again how much we have to be grateful for.

And I pray,

that someday soon

each  refugee can find joy,

in a sunray…

… For their pain has been eased,

and they have finally

found

a place they may call

home.

I'm an author on the go. Give me a caravan, laptop, camera, and Hubby at my side, ( not exactly in that order), and I'm on a 'roll'.

  1. This is beautiful and touching. I’m so sorry that your plans have been dampened by the forecast. But I hear and echo your gratitude for all that IS and is good. We spent most of today driving through beautiful scenery, lots of rolling hills and huge grassy fields…and I couldn’t help think about how many people could fit into those vast spaces…and how much they would love to be here instead of walking such long dusty roads and never knowing where they will be able to lay their heads down tonight. I hope, like you, that every man, woman and child on earth finds somewhere to call home.

  2. Thank you so much Sharon. Well, we have learned that the weather forecast is sometimes wrong… so we haven’t lost all hope. I think the same thing when we drive through the landscape. Hope you have a wonderful trip. Drive safely!

  3. Oh my goodness had me in tears. Those poor refugees. You made me realize we need to be thankful for our lives and how lucky we are to live in free countries. Your writing is so vivid that I was sitting right there with you having coffee. Beautifully written.

  4. Dee, I would love to share my morning coffee with you. 🙂 Yes, we are so lucky. I can’t even imagine being homeless, not knowing what the future will bring… and even worse, worry about the children.
Wishing you lots of lovely sunrays over your beautiful garden. 🙂

  5. The refugee situation is terribly sad and especially so, in regards to the children. 😦

Sorry your vacation plans were stymied by bad weather. We went on a three-day road trip end of June and it poured rain the whole time! We had booked in advance and couldn’t cancel so that was a real bummer. On the plus side, getting out of town was a nice break, regardless. Here’s hoping you can still go somewhere at some point.

We truly are fortunate for all we have. Good to point that out as we sometimes take these things for granted.
